Beauty in the day: he got a little scrape, and needed a bandaid. I pulled out the Bactine, and gave a little spray. Then I got some nice, soft, gauze to clean it. I started to clean.
“But go slowly,” he said.
I cleaned it kind of fast, and looked to see if he was handling it okay, and said, “I should just go fast so it will hurt less.”
“Okay, go fast, but go SLOWLY.”
I slowed down, and cleaned carefully.
“But of course, my friends are all waiting for me,” he mused.
I cocked an eyebrow and looked at him.
“Should I go fast, or should I go slow?”
He peered up at me, and then said, with authority, “You should go fast. But SLOWLY.”
Beauty in the day: he comes to the office a lot when it’s music time. He likes music, but not music class, because he’s terribly sensitive to noise. When he comes, he likes to chat a fair amount. He’s a bright boy – one who likes to learn lots of things that some other boys have yet to cultivate an interest in.
“I’m back. ”
“Hi friend, how come you’re here?”
“The same reason I’m always here. Too loud in music.”
“I do like music, and I did try. I sang for a bit. I can sing pretty good, actually.”
“Oh! Good to know! Any chance you would give me a sample of your singing?”
“Well…I really only sing best when I am under the influence.”
😂 (he quickly interpreted this for me to mean “under the influence of the music”, and forgave me for the burst of laughter that erupted over that.)
Beauty in the day: Snow Moon, penumbral lunar eclipse, and the New Year’s comet. For some, these things are celestial delights; for some, they are warning signs of possible difficulties. For educators, these things are the events that give allowance for “ah-ha” and “make it work” moments. It’s funny how a tough day can really get stacked up until you discover that there is a full moon. Then it’s, “okay, cool; I’ve got this”, and sleeves are rolled up with a sense of purpose. Full moons bring out all the color and character of the night sky, and it seems to do the same for schools.
It’s a grace-giver.
Who wouldn’t want that?
Beauty in the day: Professional Development day away from the school today. Excellent speaker, and I really liked this: he talked about kids being asked to complete a family tree, and how some kids either don’t have access to this information, don’t know it, or have mixed emotions about the process of owning and naming family members that are connected to pain in their lives. He suggested a “Kin Tree” explaining that perhaps branches of the tree might instead connect to their church, to their school, to their extra-curricular group (i.e., sports team, dance class, etc), denoting the people there (or maybe one important person) as “kin”. These are a form of extended “family”, or influencers in their lives.
My family tree just got a whole lot bigger. 💗
Beauty in the day: he came to visit in the office after school. His class is doing mealworms in science, and all the kids get their own mealworm to observe. I asked him if he was going to name his mealworm, and told him I once knew a kid who named his “Steve”. He thought about this for a moment, and then offered, “If I could keep mine, I would name him Apple Franklin,” suggesting a last name also. He had brothers with him, who then repeated this information, each in turn. One fully agreed with the Apple Franklin name. The other thought it should have been Steve.
Beauty in the day: she came in near the end of the day, Miss I-Have-Been-Here-All-Day-And-Am-Just-Now-Coming-Down-With-“Something”. I took her temperature. Nope. We did the usual – lay down for a bit – try going to the bathroom – have a drink of water.
“Well school is out in 25 minutes, so perhaps you should just go back to class and get ready.”
She thought not. “I really think I should just stay here in the clinic until school is out.”
Fine. Boring, but okay.
She came out of the clinic. “How many more minutes until school is out?”
“20 more minutes.” She went back in.
She tiptoed out again. “How many more minutes now?”
“17.” She retreated.
But then emerged again. “How many more minutes?”
“8 more.” She sighed. And returned.
Now she came out with a determined look. “How many more minutes?”
I looked. “4,” I told her. She maintained a serious, level gaze. And went back again. I didn’t see her after the bell rang – except for the pink blur.
Beauty in the day: another tooth sacrificed to the Tooth Fairy. He came in with a wide smile, and the teeny-tiny-itty-bitty tooth in his hand.
“Ms. Nordstrom! I lost another tooth!”
“You mean, you made a fake tooth to try and fool me?” 😉
“It’s not fake! Look!” He showed me the gap in his mouth.
“My goodness! You painted your tooth black to look like you lost your tooth! Whatever will be next? How far will you go to get attention?”
He pushed his tongue through the gap to prove it’s authenticity.
“Oh my goodness! You’ve created an optical illusion to fool me!”
He grinned and shook his head back and forth. “Ms. Nordstrom, you’re not going to fool me.”
We picked a tooth necklace together.
